Why I Chose A Coleman Instant Tent Over A Dome Tent

For years, campers have been reviewing and discussing whether instant tents are a viable camping solution. While the general consensus has been that they don’t offer the same protection as traditional dome tents, there is a new tent on the market that aims to dismantle those misconceptions. The coleman instant tent is a relatively new tent on the market that claims a setup and tear down time of one minute or less. The secret to this unbelievable claim is the exoskeleton frame that stays attached to the tent at all times. Setup consists of expanding the shape of the tent and locking the legs into place. Even more exciting, coleman has introduced three tent sizes all with the same one minute setup. The 4 and 6 person tent are impressive. However, the mammoth 8 person tent divided into two rooms is perfect for the family campers.

Obviously most people buy the coleman instant tent for the convenience of a one minute setup. Compared to most tents that can take as much a half hour to set up, an inexperienced camper can have the unit set up in just a few minutes. Some users are reporting they have whittled the setup down to 40 seconds. Faster than than could unsheathe their rambo survival knives! Thanks to the incredibly fast setup, you can enjoy the outdoors faster with your kids hiking, fishing, and swimming.

Coleman instant tent reviews aren’t all roses and daisies, however. There are several drawbacks to the instant tent design that should be examined before you purchase the unit. When your tent is first delivered, you will first notice the size and weight of the box. With a shipping weight of 43.8 pounds, this isn’t a tent you are going to strap to your back and hike into the sticks. However, it is suitable for the weekend campsite camper. Secondly, you’ll notice there is no rain-fly with the tent, making it extremely humid in the tent during a rain storm.

Inflatable Canoes are a Good Alternative to Hard Shell Boats

Hard shell kayaks and canoes have been around along time.  But growing in popularity and use are the new wave of inflatable canoes and kayaks found commonly on lakes and rivers.  This alternative to traditional hardshells can be a great choice for any avid fisherman or whitewater enthusiast.  I recommend their use and have owned a couple different brands with great satisfaction.  However, there are a couple things you should know before you buy.

First, don’t buy a cheap inflatable canoe.  When it comes to buying one you really need to keep in mind that you will always get what you pay for.  Spare yourself the frustration and headache tied to a popped inflatable canoe by researching and selecting a better, higher quality product.  Don’t kid yourself, an inflatable canoe is an investment and should be a high-quality product, especially if you value your time-off work.  Speaking of time, inflating and deflating an inflatable canoe is quick and easy, eliminating the need for a car rack or trailer.  Hypalon (neoprine), Nytrylon, or PVC rubber are most commonly found in higher-end models.  Delivering solid stability and security, inflatable canoes absorb impacts on the river as well or better then hardshells.  Included in most models are inflatable back rests and pads to aid the weary floater down the river or across the lake.  Also featured on most of the best inflatable canoes are abrasion resistant side rails that protect against rocky shore lines and any number of other obstacles the creep up fast while on a fast moving waterway.  You can even buy models that feature waterproof pockets for phones, cameras, and other electronics that you bring on the water.  When you’re ready to buy, choose an inflatable from Intex, Stearns, Sevylor, Sea Eagle, Zodia, or Advanced Elements.  All these manufacturers make a solid product that is durable and will last through many fishing and river trips.

The second thing to consider before buying an inflatable canoe is where to research and buy one.  Online outfitters compete aggressively on price right alongside the big-box sporting good stores.  Doing an online search can result in getting the very best price possible on an inflatable canoe.  Why?  Because the online inflatable outfitters carry minimal overhead and can drop their prices to the lowest-allowed retail price and still make a profit on the sale.  Not choosing to use the Internet to possibly buy your next inflatable can cost you money on your purchase.  There is no doubt the sales guys at the whitewater shop or local outfitter will provide you with some good information.  They often have a lot of experience and training directly from the manufacturer.  There is also the possibility they’ll want your business bad enough to match an Internet deal to make you a loyal customer.  If they do match the price you get a local guarantee and a great price.  You can’t beat that.

If you love to fish or even have a craving for the whitewater, you really need to consider investing in an inflatable canoe.  They are cost effective, functional, and the perfect alternative to hard shell canoes and kayaks.

Camp Out In Convenience And Comfort With A Propane Water Heater

Camping can be an enjoyable experience with the proper supplies. Even something as simple as battery operated LED string lights laid around the outside of a tent can make your trip that much safer, especially for your children. Camping out in the wilderness also does not automatically mean going without the comforts of home. A good example of camping equipment that can provide some of these comforts is the propane water heater. This device is both convenient and energy-efficient as it can keep you supplied with an adequate amount of heated water during any outdoor trip.

Look for models that will suit the style of camping that you do. Most models designed for camping are mostly for outdoor use and can be hung on a tree branch. You may prefer a water heater that is fitted with a shower head and as a lot of camp sites have municipal water supplies attachments for garden hoses will be extra convenient . If you like to get your water temperature just right make sure you get a model with adjustable temperature controls. Campers who have small children may also prefer a model that has an inbuilt timer to shut the shower off just in case you or children forget to do so.

Another consideration when choosing your propane water heater is its rate of flow. If you are going to be using a large bucket or Jerry can you don’t want to use up all of your water too quickly as this will mean more trips to the tap, river or lake.  Of course when you are able to use a tap or other water source directly this is not as crucial a factor.  Most propane water heaters use a battery powered ignition so make sure you get a battery that can supply the current you need. To provide water pressure you may also need a 12V pump which can also drain battery power rather quickly if you don’t have one that’s big enough.

You should get between 12 to 18 hours of operation out of a tank of gas depending on the size of your model. This makes it more critical to get one that has automatic shut off so you are not wasting precious propane. As with anything you get what you pay for, but by shopping online you may be able to secure a great deal. You could even score free shipping if you are buying other equipment which can add up to quite a bit of savings. Another benefit of online shopping is being able to read the reviews of real users so make sure you read these so you know you’re getting something that works and is durable.

Finding the Right Tent for a Single Backpacker

While you might remember camping trips in the old days of Scouts or family outings, some of those massive eight, ten, or even twelve person tents might have been great back then but they’re not practical for a modern backpacker or hiker going solo or with one other person.  While there is no “one size fits all” type of tent, there are several main factors to look for when trying to track down your ideal tent for when it’s time to hit the trails again.

When you’re going individually, space and weight are two major issues.  Generally speaking the smaller the tent, the lighter it’s going to be.  This isn’t just about fabric, but it also goes into the building materials for the tent poles: light plastic works better with small tents and is much lighter than the large metal bars that make up many larger tents.  The space topic is simple to point out: the materials that make a two man tent are going to be far less than the ones that make up a ten or twelve man tent, or even the more reasonable five man tent.

There is not a huge amount of difference between two and three man tents, although many backpackers prefer the small amount of extra space that comes with a three person tent.  Many tents designated for two people by the seller, are talking about two small people, and it can get pretty cramped in there with gear, even for a solo camper.  For a larger person a two man tent might actually be just a one man tent.  Also consider the size of your backpack and what room you will need if the weather gets ugly and you need to spend a few days inside.

It can be tempting to settle for the cheapest tent you can find, but this is an extremely poor strategy.  Materials are often lower quality and might be okay for the backyard or an occasional outing at a nearby campsite, but they’re probably not going to hold up to the long term use and weather that comes with backpacking or long term camping or traveling.  The best way to go, in my experience, is to look for a high quality three man tent specifically designed the rigors of backpacking.  They may cost closer to several hundred dollars, rather than the $50-60 that cheaper models go for, but they will last through tough long term conditions.

Merrell Chameleon ~ Are they really the best?

The Merrell Chameleon has been one of the bestsellers for Merrell for some time now.  They have had so much luck with the model that they have re-created the Chameleon’s over 15 times in different styles.  There are Chameleon sandals, shoes, and boots.  The company has a huge following and a strong customer loyalty so it is interesting and informative to understand why the Chameleon’s have been ranked as one of the top outdoor shoes in the world.

Merrell stands on the leading edge of technology and innovation and the Chameleon model is no exception. They are top of the line, high-quality products and very lightweight and flexible so you do not become exhausted by a heavy shoe.  The materials are ao flexible that your foot does not become worn out from the shoe.  The lining of the shoes is only the best…Gore-Tex.  This makes their shoes 100% water-proof for maximum protection against the elements (this is only used in some of the Chameleon models because some do not require water-proofing).

The Chameleons have high-tech Vibram rubber soles, which is the same material that professional rock climbers prefer, and it provides durability and the strongest traction available.  They also specifically place and design the traction mold for supreme grip in many terrains.  I really like the Elastic Lace System.  This is also footwear technology at its best.  This lace system provides a tight fit with a stretch.  At first one maybe skeptical of the lacing system but most customers fall in love with it real quick (not all Chameleons us the Elastic Lace System).

Lastly, Merrell has created a tailored fit for men and women.  The Chameleon arch is designed specifically for the anatomical needs of a woman.  This offers a snug fit for stronger support in the arch and heel areas.  This design not only addresses the different shapes of women’s feet, but also the differences in  ways that women walk.

Merrell Chameleon ~ Highest Performing Outdoor Shoe Available

Traveling outdoors on foot can be very uncomfortable if don’t choose quality footwear. Over the past 30 years Merrell’s have made their mark in the outdoor world.  These are not shoes that people buy just once.  Many people will buy one pair of Merrell’s and be a repeat customer for years to come.  This is because they are supreme shoes.  One of their best models is the Merrell Chameleon.  The Chameleons have been such a great seller that Merrell has produced over 15 different designs of Chameleons.

There are many reasons these shoes are so popular. Vibram rubber are what make up the soles of the Chameleons.  It is the same rubber that professional rock climbers use for their shoes.  The shoes are made with two different compounds of rubber that give optimal performance in all outdoor terrains.  The cushioned soles on the Chameleon also provide stability and supreme shock absorbency.  They are comfortable to wear no matter where one may be.

Ortholite footbeds are the technology that Merrell has chosen to support on top of the soles of the Chameleons.  This is a wise choice because it is also one of the best footbed made.  They provide excellent support and comfort for their shoes.  They are very durable and one of the key products that make the Merrell Chameleons the ultimate outdoor shoe.  Even after miles of abuse the Ortholite footbed will still have the comfort and support through all of your activity.

The fact that these shoes are some of the best outdoor shoes available and outperform anything else on the market, makes it obvious why they have such a loyal customer base.

The Advantages of Choosing an 8 Man Tent for Family Camping

One of the great things about a camping trip is that it’s so easy to just get up and go whenever you have the time and inclination, and camping with your family is a great way to spend vacation time together. Camping with a larger group, however, can take a little more planning, especially if there are kids involved in the trip. You might find yourself making lists of gear and camping food ideas well in advance.

Choosing the perfect tent for a family group seems like it should be a simple matter. The categorization of tents by number of people seems to make it easy – a 2 man tent for a couple and a 5 man tent for a group of five. But even if you are just planning to carry the tent and sleep in at night, the size of a tent categorized as a two man tent, leaves no extra room. You need to think about where to stow your gear and keep it dry, and if you are planning an extended stay be sure to consider the room you will need for extras.

For a family of four or five, an 8 man tent might seem like too much but the size can vary from 18′ x 10′ to 14′ X 8′, so your choice will probably depend on what you are taking for gear. Headroom is another consideration and being able to stand up straight inside makes a tent seem a lot less cramped. Traditionally we think of tents as pop up style tents, but there are other choices such as an easy up or Gazebo style tent with vertical walls so that all the floor space is easily accessible.

There are other advantages to choosing an 8 man tent. If the weather is not as good as you hoped and a rainy afternoon drives you inside then having the space to set up a game, or to sprawl comfortably with a book, could make the difference between comfort and chaos. Some larger tents also include a ‘lights-out’ portion, where thicker walls mean that the first light of an early summer dawn doesn’t wake the sleepers.

If you’re shopping for a new family tent or have found yourself cursing the small space after another miserable wet weekend then take a look at larger tents- you might find that the extra investment is worth it for the extra comfort for all the family.

Planning a Camping Holiday in Devon

Have you thought of going camping in England this summer?

The county of Devon, in the south of England, is highly recommended for its mild climate, rural scenery, seaside resorts, historic towns and cities, and lots of camping opportunity.

With the popularity of camping in the summer holidays, it’s well worth planning ahead to make sure you can get a reservation where you really want to go. Even if the campsite itself isn’t booked up, many campsites offer guests who reserve in advance the opportunity to pick which part of the campsite they get to camp in. So the earlier you can arrange it, the better the chances of getting a good location will be.

If you are keen on surfing, the north coast seaside resorts of Devon and Cornwall, such as Woolacombe and Newquay, would be great holiday destinations for you, while sailing and windsurfing are popular in south Devon, ranging from Plymouth through the South Hams to the Exe Estuary at Exmouth.

If you’re keener on moorland scenery and hiking, Dartmoor and Exmoor would be good locations for you. If you have in mind a more gently paced holiday in Devon, you could stay in the South Hams, or visit East Devon’s pretty villages with their thatched cottages and lanes bordered by flowering hedgerows.

And if you’re a backpacking cyclist, you could look for a campsite close to Devon’s growing network of cycle paths, which is even establishing ferry connections to cycle routes in France.

So what do you look for in a campsite?

Obviously, to some extent it will depend on the ages of people you are camping with. Some campsites may not allow same sex groups of young singles, while others may have beaches, rivers or hiking trails that are not safe for young children.

Many of the bigger, family orientated campsites and caravan parks have onsite playgrounds and children’s activities, so if you have young children, of course a camping spot near the playground would be ideal. Holiday parks in Devon and Cornwall are well known for providing fun activities for all the family, as well as great beaches and local tourist attractions.

The type of camping you are planning may also make a difference to which campsites you can stay in. Some may be too small for a large RV, and will not have hookups, tarmac or other RV facilities. Other larger campsites may be designed more with big tents and caravans in mind. And if you don’t have a tent or caravan, don’t give up: most holiday parks have many static caravans permanently positioned on site, so all you need to do is book one and pack your car: your camping holiday in Devon awaits you!

How To Sleep Comfortably Camping

I have been camping for the better part of my life. As a youngster, I could sleep on a pile of rocks and never wake up. By the time they reached my teens, it was no longer “cool” to sleep on the ground as we had discovered the thin foam camping pads. Even these did not provide the comfort that I needed for a good night sleep. With all the camping that I did, I longed for something that could keep me sleeping all night just as I did my own bed.  For a good nights sleep camping, you will need the following: a high quality and comfortable sleeping bag, either a foam pad, self inflating air mattress, or a lightweight air mattress. Needless to say, you are going to need a tent or a shelter to keep the bugs and the rain out.

Tents, Motor Home And Travel Trailer In Review
To get a good nights sleep it’s best to start out with your shelter. I have camped in motor homes, tents, under bridges, under the stars, in boats, and on the beaches. My ultimate dream is to sleep in an Airstream travel trailer. For the purposes of this article, let’s discuss camping tents because that is the most common dwelling to sleep in while camping. Since I began camping with my family, I decided I needed a tent that could be put up in less than 15 minutes and keep our family of four dry in a storm with up to a 100 mph winds. Our tent of choice is the REI base camp. It has never failed us for a good nights sleep. While not as comfortable as a motor home or travel trailer, it more than does the job for us.  If you really are having trouble sleeping while camping, then it’s time to start searching for Airstream trailers for sale as you will sleep better in one of these than any other outdoor situation.

How To Choose A Comfortable Sleeping Bag
I have been sleeping in a down sleeping bag for over 20 years. I have never gotten wet at night. Many people say that you should not sleep in a down sleeping bag because they are very cold when wet. My standard answer is “then don’t get wet”. In my opinion, there is nothing more comfortable and warm than a down sleeping bag. The best quality sleeping bag that I’ve ever found is the L.L. Bean 20° down sleeping bag. It’s square cut for camping. You can move around and not feel like you’re confined like you do in the mummy bag. Even though they are rated for 20°, you will never wake up in a sweat and feel hot. You can pick one up from L.L. Bean for under 200 bucks. They are also guaranteed for life.  I am not against synthetic bags.  My 2 boys sleep in The North Face sleeping bags and have no complaints.

What To Avoid In An Air Mattress
At all costs, avoid air mattresses that are easily punctured. Yes, you can find air mattresses that hold air all night and are strong enough to not get punctured by rambunctious kids. I like the luxurious REI camp bed. It’s one of those self inflating air mattresses that are almost bulletproof. Even though they are self inflating, I usually give it extra air to make it firm.  Sometime we camp with the lightweight Aerobed  or Coleman queen size inflatable air mattress.  Air mattresses are slightly more comfortable than the REI Camp Bed, but not as durable.  Make sure that you read the Coleman air mattress reviews because they usually come out on top of all the others.

You can sleep comfortably while camping. There is no reason that you should be less comfortable than in your home. Get a high-quality tent, a comfortable and warm sleeping bag, and an air mattress that does not go flat in the middle the night and you will be a ‘happy camper’.

Best Reasons Why You Should Choose a LED Camping Flashlight

If you’re looking for a good camping flashlight, choose LED. This device is very different from common flashlights for it gives conveniences that cannot be provided by others. Several years back, LED lights were said to be very pricey and the light that they gave off were quite dim. Nowadays, these products have evolved and are now able to give off very bright light and have the ability to light up a very wide coverage. Aside from that, they have also become smaller and lighter. Due to these reasons, they are highly recommended by campers to be used in camp sites. There are also other reasons why these lights are highly preferred by outdoor enthusiasts.

First of all, the LED camping flashlight is very sturdy. If you love to go to places with tough conditions, this device is the perfect item for you. Even if it falls from a very high place, you can be sure that it won’t get damaged. In addition, it also has the ability to endure up to 82 degrees Celsius of temperature. No matter what you do with it, whether you drop it, toss it off or push it off the table, this device will still be able to function. Another reason why this kind of flashlight is worth choosing is because it is very long-lasting.

Even if you just use one set of batteries on it, it could still provide light for up to 60 hours non-stop. Today, there are new LEDs which have a battery life of 500 hours! Isn’t it amazing? Moreover, this type of flashlight is also very safe to use. This device does not cause fires because it has no fuel in it. Furthermore, if you compare it to lanterns, lamps and other camping gear, the light that it gives off is so much brighter. Lastly, this product is also available in a wide variety of products so you can really choose the right product for you.

Why 4X4 Vans Are Better Than SUVs

A 4×4 van is one of the most useful utility vehicles on the planet. How do I come to this conclusion? Well let’s do a simple comparison. Most 4×4 vans will comfortably fit both 7 passengers and their luggage. Most SUVs can carry only five passengers comfortably and there is little if any luggage space for all these adults unless you go with the Chevy or GMC suburban model. A 4×4 van is super easy to enter and exit. Just think of the large cargo loading and unloading sliding doors that all cargo vans come equipped with. Tall people love the headroom in a 4×4 van. Most SUVs cannot be converted into a camping vehicle like a 4×4 van. Similar to the VW camper van, 4×4 vans can have a roof top pop up tent installed. Rather than spending thousands of extra dollars on a 4×4 van for sale, many people find a locking differential “pre-runner” van just as good or better suited for their needs There are many online communities that openly share their experiences of what is a good buy on 4×4 vans for sale. People on forums tend to be brutally honest and will not sugar coat their good and bad experiences Forget nationally syndicated magazine and brand name websites that rely on advertises for their profits.

Pre-Runner Positraction VS 4×4 Conversion Van

Pre-runner 2 wheel drive vans actually handle better than their four wheel drive counter parts, have just as high of ground clearance, and cost much less.  If all you need is locking rear differential for traction and high ground clearance, then a pre-runne 4×2 van will be your best choice If you are not experienced enough to install the positrac differential, then have a professional do the job for you This will give you incredible traction and will get you through most off-road situations. An onboard power winch should be part of your game plan if you will doing any off-roading.

What To Look For In A 4×4 Van For Sale
Look for a 4X4  van  for sale with a camper interior setup that is roomy and includes everything you might need for comfortable off road camping such as an exterior shower, a 2 burner stove, mini refrigerator, cabinets, power inverter, pent house roof extension with sleeping quarters, roof rack.and stow-able port-a-potty.

  • Upgraded suspension.  Since you will be carrying many extra pounds, a professionally upgraded suspension such as a solid axle leaf spring suspension is worth considering.
  • Safety Engineering.  If you purchase a used 4X4 van, make sure that you check the receipts and that your 4 wheel drive system was not pulled out of a wrecking yard and haphazardly slapped on.
  • Warranty.  Whether you purchase a new or used van, ask about a warranty.

4 Things A Standard SUV Cannot Do

  1. Pull a loaded toy hauler with 8 people in the passenger area up a 10,000 foot mountain pass
  2. Have a complete meal cooked on the inside
  3. Sleep 4 people comfortably
  4. Be Featured On Scooby Doo

In all honesty, SUVs do have their place.  Soccer moms across America love them.  They park easier and fit the bill for city driving.  But when it comes to serious off-roading with a family, nothing beats the room and size of a 4X4 camper van for sale.  It will do the job with the added benefit of a place to cook your dinner and keep your beer cold.

TomTom GPS Buying Guide

Whether upgrading or ditching cumbersome maps for the first time, taking your time and really looking for the best GPS units requires a lot of effort. Researching on your own really is not enough as sometimes, even those with a little background on all things tech-related can still get lost in the sea of acronyms and proprietary terms.
This is where guides like these come in, to offer you some pointers in narrowing down your choices and have you on the lookout for red flags and common pitfalls. Because before you ca navigate the streets, you must first navigate the isles at your local consumer electronics store.

The first thing to consider when looking at GPS units is the brand. A quick list of the best ones include: TomTom GPS, Garmin GPS, and Magellan GPS. Going with reputable manufacturers with names to protect will at least give you the assurance that you are getting a quality product. This is important because a GPS unit is a tool, not a toy. You wouldn’t want yours conking out and leaving you in the middle of nowhere now would you? In-car units are usually placed on top of dashboards and this introduces a unique set of problems for cheap knockoffs. The heat from the sun shining through your windshield, plus the vibrations when the car is running requires a unit that’s robust. In addition to being assured of the quality of the unit you are getting, going with the bigger names will assure you that you will have support anytime you need it. GPS navigation is only as good as the maps downloaded onto the unit, so support is important. As mapping out every side street and narrow alley takes time, money, and resources, only the major players can afford to keep their maps up-to-date.

Also consider the actual user-friendliness of the unit. A soothing and clear voice prompt may sound trivial, but when navigating your way through unfamiliar territory, you will appreciate the feature. Hooking up the unit to your computer and downloading the latest maps and updates should be seamless. Some people prefer to do this at the last minute when all their bags are packed, and this should not delay your trip. A simple user interface on the unit itself should also be mandatory. Look for the biggest screen that you can afford (or fit in the intended space in your dashboard) to make operation easier. Buttons and knobs should be large enough and offer adequate tactile feedback. You should be able to operate your GPS units even with gloves on.

Don’t forget to check out websites that give out unbiased GPS reviews to give you at least an idea of what features you’ll be needing. The best GPS units like TomTom GPS, Garmin GPS, and Magellan GPS each have their own set of pros and cons. It’s up to you to assess your needs and choose based on the features you must have.

Bluetooth GPS Receiver Buyer’s Guide

Those looking to upgrade are in for an easier time than first-time buyers, but there are simple tips that should serve you well in your search for the best Bluetooth GPS receiver that suits your needs and budget.

The Voice Prompt of any GPS:
– this may sound trivial to some, but on a long trip, it’s important. The bigger companies like Garmin GPS allows users to change the voice prompt of their Garmin Nuvi line of GPS systems and even download new ones from their website. A soothing voice that’s clear and free of distracting nuances should be the ideal one. Listen to it yourself before buying. Just remind yourself that making a mistake here has the potential to drive you crazy. Just imagine having to listen to Jar Jar Binks telling you to “turn left” or “yoosa stop” for three hours and you’d consider ignoring his directions and driving off a cliff to end your suffering.

Design of Handheld GPS Units:
– do you go to your destination by car or do you walk/commute. There is a big difference between in-car navigation systems and handheld GPS units. First thing to consider when going with a handheld unit is a lot of mobile phones now come with GPS so you can lighten the load as well as simplify your gear when you consolidate a few things. Handheld GPS units still offer some advantages, though. For one, a GPS receiver eats a lot of juice and if you are on the road for some time, you can use up your phone’s battery before very quickly. With a dedicated GPS device, you get to use your phones for what it’s really intended for – making calls. also, dedicated GPS devices have better reception and thus, accuracy because of a bigger antenna and also dedicated circuitry. With an in-car system, check to see if the design gives you the option of placing the GPS receiver wherever you like. Some have this crucial part built in to the unit itself. This is not the ideal place for it because the signal from the GPS satellites orbiting the earth can be blocked by the dashboard if the unit is mounted in its intended location. Having the option to place the GPS receiver on the windshield or someplace similar would allow your Bluetooth GPS receiver to get the best signal possible – greatly increasing its accuracy.

Compatibility of GPS Receiver:
– Bluetooth marketing claims that the technology is a standard, meaning everything that has Bluetooth is supposed to be compatible with everything else. This is not the case, however. Check out GPS reviews to find out if the Bluetooth GPS receiver you are planning to buy is compatible with the devices you want to link it to. As most buyers are looking to connect their unit to a car’s multifunction display, check first if there are known issues with your particular combination. Also, don’t forget to check the compatibility of the navigation software with your computer. With most systems, you will have to connect it to a computer in order to sync it with your destination and this has the potential of ruining your trip before it even starts if you don’t do your homework.

Choosing The Perfect Sleeping Bag

A sleeping bag is one of those things that most people know that they need when they go camping. However, what they many not understand is that there are certain criteria that they should keep in mind in order to make sure that they are getting the best sleeping bag for their camping trips. It is especially important to be comfortable as possible and get a good nights sleep.

First off, consider what the season is and what the weather is is expected to be like where you will be camping. If you camp during the summer months then you are not going to want a winter sleeping bag because you are simply going to be burning up. However, you do not want a summer bag for winter camping because you are going to find yourself freezing. For those that go throughout the year, you may want to have two different bags, one for each season of the year that you go camping, in order to make sure that all of your bases are covered.

Secondly, consider your level of comfort. There are various styles of bags for various different uses. Many people find that getting close fitting single sleeping bags make them a bit claustrophobic. And when this happens the person is going to find themselves having a hard time sleeping on their trip. Thus, the person should look at their personal limits and see if they can handle a small bag, if not, get a bigger bag so that you are going to feel the most comfortable while on your camping trip. Combines with a good Intex air bed and you will have it made.

Camping Lantern Buyer’s Guide

There are a few things you need to consider when looking to buy one of the most important pieces of camping equipment you can bring outdoors. A camping lantern will allow you to safely function after the sun goes down. It is safe to say that your time outdoors will be a whole lot more comfortable when you include one in your camping checklist. However, you have to choose one that will serve you well and do the job it’s supposed to do.

There are various kinds of camping lights that will work well and which you choose depends on your preference and where and how you plan to use them. Battery operated lights are very handy for lighting inside smaller tents and are safest of all since they have no open flame. Liquid fuel lanterns, commonly called coleman lanterns are very bright and in colder times give off some heat. They have a delicate mantle that the vaporized liquid gas is burned in, which can be troublesome if the lantern get too rough of treatment. The third type of camping lantern is powered by propane in a pressurized container which works well as long as it is not too cold (-10F), and you have plenty of the specialized containers of fuel.

You will want to brush up on battery terminology and specs so you can determine how long your batteries last, how long you will be able to stay out, and how many spare batteries will you need to bring. Whenever possible, opt for rechargeable batteries as they pose several advantages over the disposable ones such as being reusable hundreds of times. Another benefit is that they are gentler on your wallet in the long run. A good set of rechargeable batteries can pay for themselves if you go out frequently. Hours of use actually adds just cents to your electricity bills.

Features that add to the camping lantern’s functionality are always welcome. Should you be confused about what features are worthwhile and what are just useless fluff probably used to drive the price up, you have to envision yourself using each feature. Do you need that strobe function? How about different colored lights? If you answered no to most features, you are better off buying a basic model.

Make sure that your camping lantern is built to last. The bigger names like Maglite offer fortified models for outdoor use. Many models are also weatherproof to give you more confidence. These models are tougher than the usual fare and often come with light bulbs that won’t let you down. The bodies of these models are also tougher and can also be used as makeshift striking implements to be used in emergencies.

Liquid fuel lanterns are the old standby that have been used for years in the outdoor world and most places where light is needed and electricity is not available. Be sure to get a quality lantern like coleman because the process of pumping and vaporizing then burning the fuel can become problematic.

Propane powered outdoor lights are very popular for many reasons. The fuel comes in a sealed, pressurized container – no liquid to pour and spill – and they give off a very bright light.

So, there you have it – a simple guide to help you through the camping lantern selection process. This will at least ensure that you get a product that is good enough to take outdoors and subject to rougher-than-normal use.

Need A Winter Camping Toilet?

On extended pack trips in the fall and winter a camping toilet can seem like an impossible place to expect any comfort at all. And maybe comfort is the wrong word, but relative to not having shelter for the toilet, it will seem comfortable.

Add the equipment you will need to your camping checklist so you don’t miss a crucial piece like the seat. Along with your shovel, saw, and axe, you will need either a large tarp or better yet, a teepee tent roughly 6′ X 6′, a few 16 or 20 penny nails, something to pound them with, and an old toilet seat.

Locate the perfect spot, south facing, way away from the creek, and maybe in a small bunch of trees for a little added wind protection. Smaller trees are best because you don’t want to have to contend with tree roots when digging the pit. Mark out a hole and be sure there is adequate room for the teepee tent around it, then get to diggin’. Save the dirt in a pile to cover the hole up later. Depending on your length of stay and number of users, dig a pit about 2 feet square and 2 or 3 feet deep.

Next find some dead fallen poles, whatever size you want to cut, 3 to 6 inches in diameter work well, and cut enough to built a temporary frame around the edges of the pit. Make the first pieces a little long so they won’t tend to cave in the sides of your pit. Dig them in a bit as needed to make the platform level. Be sure to build the front side of the frame well to the front of the edge because that is where the weight of the user will be concentrated. Sometimes you can find a large flat rock or two to ’tile’ that area and reinforce it.

Finish up with 3 or 4 cut poles for each side, stacked log cabin style and nailed in place. Don’t use too many nails because you will have to pull them all when you leave. Finish the flat top with smaller poles and leave a gap where the seat you brought along will sit.

Set the teepee tent up over the log frame, and you will have a wind and rain proof camping toilet that will be the envy of all the wilderness creatures.

Nothing Like Going Pike Fishing

Many anglers love chasing the biggest and hardest fighting freshwater fish around, and that’s part of the reason the spring ice break is so exciting.  It means that the good fishing times are just around the corner…if only the water would warm up.  For anglers lucky to live far enough north, there is one fantastic sports fish who still loves to hammer away at early spring lures even when it is still cold.  Northern pike are always in the mood to hammer away at even the early spring thaw, and so if you’re looking to find some good northern pike fishing, then starting right after the ice break will work just fine.

Maybe this is part of what helps create that northern angler obsession with pike fishing.  It’s not only the trophy sized pike, but the early jump on them, the fact that the year long chase lasts longer for these cold weather giants far longer than many other fish who stop feeding earlier in the year and get started feeding later after the thaw.  However chasing northerns means you can fish throughout all the seasons: something you can’t say about many freshwater fish the United States.

Great pike fishing lures are the ones that mimic local fish they love to ambush, make noise or waves or anything to either get their attention or even just tick them off.  In fact, pike are so territorial that even if they aren’t hungry or like the look of your lure, then if you tick them off enough that will be enough many times to get them to hit.  Even if it’s just a “snake,” the common angler’s slang for a small pike because of their long snake-like form at small sizes, you might be surprised just how good a fight they can put up.
