Camp Out In Convenience And Comfort With A Propane Water Heater

Camping can be an enjoyable experience with the proper supplies. Even something as simple as battery operated LED string lights laid around the outside of a tent can make your trip that much safer, especially for your children. Camping out in the wilderness also does not automatically mean going without the comforts of home. A good example of camping equipment that can provide some of these comforts is the propane water heater. This device is both convenient and energy-efficient as it can keep you supplied with an adequate amount of heated water during any outdoor trip.

Look for models that will suit the style of camping that you do. Most models designed for camping are mostly for outdoor use and can be hung on a tree branch. Finding the Right Tent for a Single Backpacker

While you might remember camping trips in the old days of Scouts or family outings, some of those massive eight, ten, or even twelve person tents might have been great back then but they’re not practical for a modern backpacker or hiker going solo or with one other person.  While there is no “one size fits all” type of tent, there are several main factors to look for when trying to track down your ideal tent for when it’s time to hit the trails again.

When you’re going individually, space and weight are two major issues.  Generally speaking the smaller the tent, the lighter it’s going to be.  This isn’t just about fabric, but it also goes into the building materials for the tent poles: light plastic works better with small tents and is much lighter than the large metal bars that make up many larger tents.  The space topic is simple to point out: the materials that make a two man tent are going to be far less than the ones that make up a ten or twelve man tent, or even the more reasonable five man tent.

There is not a huge amount of difference between two and three man tents, although many backpackers prefer the small amount of extra space that comes with a three person tent.  Many tents designated for two people by the seller, are talking about two small people, and it can get pretty cramped in there with gear, even for a solo camper.  For a larger person a two man tent might actually be just a one man tent.  Also consider the size of your backpack and what room you will need if the weather gets ugly and you need to spend a few days inside.

It can be tempting to settle for the cheapest tent you can find, but this is an extremely poor strategy.  Materials are often lower quality and might be okay for the backyard or an occasional outing at a nearby campsite, but they’re probably not going to hold up to the long term use and weather that comes with backpacking or long term camping or traveling.  The best way to go, in my experience, is to look for a high quality three man tent specifically designed the rigors of backpacking.  They may cost closer to several hundred dollars, rather than the $50-60 that cheaper models go for, but they will last through tough long term conditions.

The Advantages of Choosing an 8 Man Tent for Family Camping

One of the great things about a camping trip is that it’s so easy to just get up and go whenever you have the time and inclination, and camping with your family is a great way to spend vacation time together. Camping with a larger group, however, can take a little more planning, especially if there are kids involved in the trip. You might find yourself making lists of gear and camping food ideas well in advance.

Choosing the perfect tent for a family group seems like it should be a simple matter. The categorization of tents by number of people seems to make it easy – a 2 man tent for a couple and a 5 man tent for a group of five. But even if you are just planning to carry the tent and sleep in at night, the size of a tent categorized as a two man tent, leaves no extra room. You need to think about where to stow your gear and keep it dry, and if you are planning an extended stay be sure to consider the room you will need for extras.

For a family of four or five, an 8 man tent might seem like too much but the size can vary from 18′ x 10′ to 14′ X 8′, so your choice will probably depend on what you are taking for gear. Headroom is another consideration and being able to stand up straight inside makes a tent seem a lot less cramped. Traditionally we think of tents as pop up style tents, but there are other choices such as an easy up or Gazebo style tent with vertical walls so that all the floor space is easily accessible.

There are other advantages to choosing an 8 man tent. If the weather is not as good as you hoped and a rainy afternoon drives you inside then having the space to set up a game, or to sprawl comfortably with a book, could make the difference between comfort and chaos. Planning a Camping Holiday in Devon

Have you thought of going camping in England this summer?

The county of Devon, in the south of England, is highly recommended for its mild climate, rural scenery, seaside resorts, historic towns and cities, and lots of camping opportunity.

With the popularity of camping in the summer holidays, it’s well worth planning ahead to make sure you can get a reservation where you really want to go. Even if the campsite itself isn’t booked up, many campsites offer guests who reserve in advance the opportunity to pick which part of the campsite they get to camp in. So the earlier you can arrange it, the better the chances of getting a good location will be.

If you are keen on surfing, the north coast seaside resorts of Devon and Cornwall, such as Woolacombe and Newquay, would be great holiday destinations for you, while sailing and windsurfing are popular in south Devon, ranging from Plymouth through the South Hams to the Exe Estuary at Exmouth.

If you’re keener on moorland scenery and hiking, Dartmoor and Exmoor would be good locations for you. If you have in mind a more gently paced holiday in Devon, you could stay in the South Hams, or visit East Devon’s pretty villages with their thatched cottages and lanes bordered by flowering hedgerows.

So what do you look for in a campsite?

Obviously, to some extent it will depend on the ages of people you are camping with. Some campsites may not allow same sex groups of young singles, while others may have beaches, rivers or hiking trails that are not safe for young children.

Many of the bigger, family orientated campsites and caravan parks have onsite playgrounds and children’s activities, so if you have young children, of course a camping spot near the playground would be ideal. Holiday parks in Devon and Cornwall are well known for providing fun activities for all the family, as well as great beaches and local tourist attractions.

The type of camping you are planning may also make a difference to which campsites you can stay in. Some may be too small for a large RV, and will not have hookups, tarmac or other RV facilities. Other larger campsites may be designed more with big tents and caravans in mind. And if you don’t have a tent or caravan, don’t give up: most holiday parks have many static caravans permanently positioned on site, so all you need to do is book one and pack your car: your camping holiday in Devon awaits you!

How To Sleep Comfortably Camping

I have been camping for the better part of my life. As a youngster, I could sleep on a pile of rocks and never wake up. By the time they reached my teens, it was no longer “cool” to sleep on the ground as we had discovered the thin foam camping pads. Even these did not provide the comfort that I needed for a good night sleep. With all the camping that I did, I longed for something that could keep me sleeping all night just as I did my own bed.  For a good nights sleep camping, you will need the following: a high quality and comfortable sleeping bag, either a foam pad, self inflating air mattress, or a lightweight air mattress. Needless to say, you are going to need a tent or a shelter to keep the bugs and the rain out.

Tents, Motor Home And Travel Trailer In Review
To get a good nights sleep it’s best to start out with your shelter. I have camped in motor homes, tents, under bridges, under the stars, in boats, and on the beaches. My ultimate dream is to sleep in an Airstream travel trailer. For the purposes of this article, let’s discuss camping tents because that is the most common dwelling to sleep in while camping. Since I began camping with my family, I decided I needed a tent that could be put up in less than 15 minutes and keep our family of four dry in a storm with up to a 100 mph winds. Our tent of choice is the REI base camp. It has never failed us for a good nights sleep. While not as comfortable as a motor home or travel trailer, it more than does the job for us.  If you really are having trouble sleeping while camping, then it’s time to start searching for Airstream trailers for sale as you will sleep better in one of these than any other outdoor situation.

How To Choose A Comfortable Sleeping Bag
I have been sleeping in a down sleeping bag for over 20 years. I have never gotten wet at night. Many people say that you should not sleep in a down sleeping bag because they are very cold when wet. My standard answer is “then don’t get wet”. In my opinion, there is nothing more comfortable and warm than a down sleeping bag. The best quality sleeping bag that I’ve ever found is the L.L. Bean 20° down sleeping bag. It’s square cut for camping. You can move around and not feel like you’re confined like you do in the mummy bag. Even though they are rated for 20°, you will never wake up in a sweat and feel hot. You can pick one up from L.L. Bean for under 200 bucks. They are also guaranteed for life.  I am not against synthetic bags.  My 2 boys sleep in The North Face sleeping bags and have no complaints. 

What To Avoid In An Air Mattress
At all costs, avoid air mattresses that are easily punctured. Yes, you can find air mattresses that hold air all night and are strong enough to not get punctured by rambunctious kids. I like the luxurious REI camp bed. It’s one of those self inflating air mattresses that are almost bulletproof. Even though they are self inflating, I usually give it extra air to make it firm.  Sometime we camp with the lightweight Aerobed  or Coleman queen size inflatable air mattress.  Air mattresses are slightly more comfortable than the REI Camp Bed, but not as durable.  Make sure that you read the Coleman air mattress reviews because they usually come out on top of all the others.

You can sleep comfortably while camping. There is no reason that you should be less comfortable than in your home. Get a high-quality tent, a comfortable and warm sleeping bag, and an air mattress that does not go flat in the middle the night and you will be a ‘happy camper’.

Need A Winter Camping Toilet?

On extended pack trips in the fall and winter a camping toilet can seem like an impossible place to expect any comfort at all. And maybe comfort is the wrong word, but relative to not having shelter for the toilet, it will seem comfortable.

Add the equipment you will need to your camping checklist so you don’t miss a crucial piece like the seat. Along with your shovel, saw, and axe, you will need either a large tarp or better yet, a teepee tent roughly 6′ X 6′, a few 16 or 20 penny nails, something to pound them with, and an old toilet seat.

Locate the perfect spot, south facing, way away from the creek, and maybe in a small bunch of trees for a little added wind protection. Smaller trees are best because you don’t want to have to contend with tree roots when digging the pit. Mark out a hole and be sure there is adequate room for the teepee tent around it, then get to diggin’. Save the dirt in a pile to cover the hole up later. Depending on your length of stay and number of users, dig a pit about 2 feet square and 2 or 3 feet deep.

Next find some dead fallen poles, whatever size you want to cut, 3 to 6 inches in diameter work well, and cut enough to built a temporary frame around the edges of the pit. Make the first pieces a little long so they won’t tend to cave in the sides of your pit. Dig them in a bit as needed to make the platform level. Be sure to build the front side of the frame well to the front of the edge because that is where the weight of the user will be concentrated. Sometimes you can find a large flat rock or two to ’tile’ that area and reinforce it.

Finish up with 3 or 4 cut poles for each side, stacked log cabin style and nailed in place. Don’t use too many nails because you will have to pull them all when you leave. Finish the flat top with smaller poles and leave a gap where the seat you brought along will sit.

Set the teepee tent up over the log frame, and you will have a wind and rain proof camping toilet that will be the envy of all the wilderness creatures.

Many anglers love chasing the biggest and hardest fighting freshwater fish around, and that’s part of the reason the spring ice break is so exciting.  It means that the good fishing times are just around the corner…if only the water would warm up.  For anglers lucky to live far enough north, there is one fantastic sports fish who still loves to hammer away at early spring lures even when it is still cold.  Northern pike are always in the mood to hammer away at even the early spring thaw, and so if you’re looking to find some good northern pike fishing, then starting right after the ice break will work just fine.

Maybe this is part of what helps create that northern angler obsession with pike fishing.  It’s not only the trophy sized pike, but the early jump on them, the fact that the year long chase lasts longer for these cold weather giants far longer than many other fish who stop feeding earlier in the year and get started feeding later after the thaw.  However chasing northerns means you can fish throughout all the seasons: something you can’t say about many freshwater fish the United States.

Great pike fishing lures are the ones that mimic local fish they love to ambush, make noise or waves or anything to either get their attention or even just tick them off.  In fact, pike are so territorial that even if they aren’t hungry or like the look of your lure, then if you tick them off enough that will be enough many times to get them to hit.  Even if it’s just a “snake,” the common angler’s slang for a small pike because of their long snake-like form at small sizes, you might be surprised just how good a fight they can put up.
